University of Sofia 'St. Kliment Ohridski' (UNI SOFIA) is the first Bulgarian academic establishment of higher learning. Its history is an embodiment and a continuation of the century long cultural and educational tradition of the Bulgarian nation.

Gradually, Sofia University has become one of the most highly reputable research centers on the Balkans, a full-fledged university of the European type.

Today UNI SOFIA is the biggest and most prestigious scientific hub in the country. It has 16 faculties (Faculty of Slavic Studies, Faculty of Classical and Contemporary Languages, Faculty of History, Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Pre-School and Primary School Education, Faculty of Geology and Geography, the Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Medicine) and 3 Departments (Department of Information and In-Service Teacher Training, Department of Language Education, Department of Sports) with 105 special subjects being taught.

Within the framework of UNI SOFIA there are several independent units: the University Library, the University Press with a printing house, IT Centre, a Science Research Sector (NIS), the University Botanic Gardens. There are also several research centers in different scientific areas. NIS is certified under ISO 9001:2008. The total UNI SOFIA staff numbers about 3125 people, including 1800 lecturers. The total number of students in UNI SOFIA is more than 20 000 including 800 PhD students.
