The Book Heritage Lab is an interdisciplinary research centre of the KU Leuven founded in 2016. The lab focuses on diagnosis, research and conservation of medieval manuscripts, early printed books and documentary heritage. We concentrate on material history, book archaeology, preservation and scientific imaging
The Book Heritage Lab – Expertisecentrum voor Boek & Erfgoed – KU Leuven realises state of the art research on the material aspects of book and documentary heritage. The expertise of the Book Heritage Lab is focused on academic profiled research in an interdisciplinary context. The research and services concentrate on the development of new insights for the diagnosis of fragile and unique heritage. It makes use of scientific imaging such as photometric stereo and multispectral imaging, in combination with analytical techniques such as XRF-analysis. The research on heritage within the Book Heritage Lab combines methodologies from Humanities and Science. It is equipped to receive unique and fragile books and manuscripts under the best circumstances in order to diagnose their condition, textual and artistic content and deterioration in an advanced manner and to perform efficient conservation and preservation. The Book Heritage Lab is a pioneer in integrating digital imaging and analysis in protocols for documentary heritage research. It follows the deontological code developed within the international research platform ICOM-CC.
The Book Heritage Lab is located in the Maurits Sabbe Library, Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, Leuven (B). However, equipment can be brought to your location for onsite services.
